Here are some pictures from today’s trip to Sanganer in Jaipur where we went to see the blocks being made and some printing happening. We are having to make some final adjustments to our designs before handing them over to the block maker.
All block printing is done by hand
Jaipur is world famous for this traditional Indian skill
Many metres of fabric can be printed in a single day
Some of the designs are very light and simple
Getting the blocks into perfect position is the real art
After printing the fabric goes through a fixing process so that they dye stays put.
The blocks must be kept in oil for 2 days before they can be used in printing.
These are some typical designs associated with Jaipur block printing
Although the tools are simple the possibilities are endless.
Some more complex designs.
Accuracy and consistency are key.
All blocks are hand carved.
The speed at which these men work is remarkable.
Fine detail can be achieved in the designs.
This artisan is doing the detailed work on this block.
There is no room for error so this block maker remains focussed.
This street rings with the taps of the hammers.
The block maker creates an outline.
It is precise work.
The blocks are painted white to make the contrast easier to see.
Our designs may be next!
It is fascinating to watch.
